Mini Palma Rule And Targets

Mini Palma Rule And Targets
Everything you never wanted to know

Posted by Bill Corcoran

Well, maybe just a few notes.

In the picture, on the left, you can see the NRA MR-31 target which simulates 600 yard shooting at an actual distance of 100 yards.  If you shoot a CMP Games rifle, this will be your target.

On the right is a fraction of the paper with the Mini-Palma, the mid-page target above the 'SS' is the sighting shot target for the 1000 yard phase.  Note the scoring rings.  If you shoot a .22  rimfire or some hotshot .223 or something else similar. this will be your target.

Hope that helps

  1. Here's a link to another gun club that runs these.  It has some interesting information.

To reiterate what we're doing at Osage Orange Shaprshooters on Feb. 23:

Depending on which rifle you bring, you may shoot either of two different matches.

Someone with a .22 LR or a .223 centerfire rifle (or any of the .17 or other weird cartridges that exist) will shoot on the Mini Palma targets.

If you bring a CMP Games rifle (M1, Springfield, etc or AR15 A1) you will shoot on the NRA MR-31 target.

Depending on how many people shoot .22 LR vs .223 centerfire and scopes vs iron sights I may slice and dice the awards categories further than on the match program.  Clearly it will be easier to shoot a good score with .223 match rifle than it would with a .22 LR, so we will take that into account.

And if a few people bring the old .22 from days gone by (rather than an Anschutz match rifle) we may have an extra category for that.  Get your friends together and all shoot the same type of rifle so you can compete.  No, there will be no awards given to sole-survivors in a category.  If you're in a category of 1, I will shake your hand and congratulate you for beating yourself.

If there are enough people in different CMP Games rifle divisions (M1 vs Vintage, for example) we may slice and dice those categories too to come up with some extra winners.

The whole idea is to hone your prone shooting skills.  I'd schedule a match to hone your offhand shooting skills, but with winds the way they are in the winter, it might not be too fun.  Best leave that to your own time.

    • So who out there is going to shoot 224 and smaller with a bipod? Sound off so we know if that is going to be a class.

    • So Saturday you mentioned bipod on the 224 and smaller, ya or na?

      • Sure.  And get a couple other guys to do it and you'll have your own class.
